Wedding Traditions – The first dance

As we all know, the first dance is where the bride and groom glide elegantly around the dance floor (or not in some cases), to lead the way for the rest of us to take to the dance floor and party the night away. This tradition didn’t start with weddings though…

The first dance originates from balls being held by wealthy families. It was custom for the host of the event or the guest of honour to have the first dance of the evening. The idea being, just as it is today, that this opens the dancing for the rest of the evening.

Traditionally the first dance was a waltz but today anything goes! Dances now range from ballroom and salsa to swaying (for those with two left feet) or a surprise choreographed dance just for the couple.

Whatever dance you choose, who doesn’t love a good boogie!?
